Teenagers worried about their weight need good nutrition advice

When you hit puberty, you develop a deeper sense of self-awareness about your body. This can be an unpleasant time as you might feel out of control and anxious about how you look. What you have to remember is, everyone is different and it’s those differences which make people interesting and attractive!

You might be feeling as if you’re too fat. During puberty, adolescent bodies do tend to put on puppy fat. This tends to shed away as you grow older so not much to worry about. What you should be worrying about is your nutrition.

Teenage obesity has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. This is because kids between the age of 13 and 19 aren’t as active as before. They spend a long time sitting at desks at school, or in front of screens at home (computers, games consoles, and TVs). It used to be ok to snack on biscuits and chips because adolescents were running around a lot more, burning off of those calories. Now those calories are stored and turned into fat.Get out now to exercise more instead of staying indoors.

Here are our top tips to stay trim and a healthy weight according to your size, gender, and age:

Do
• Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
• Exercise! Join a dance class, football club or swimming pool, anything. Get a friend to come with you so you’re more likely to go!
• Eat fruit, vegetables and nuts.
• Cook! If you learn to cook, you’ll enjoy food a lot more and become familiar with new yummy ingredients!

Don’t
• Eat saturated fats like: burgers, sausages, sweets, processed cheese, and chips.
• Starve yourself or follow celebrity diets. They’re just stupid and they don’t work. You’ll feel hungry, tired, grumpy and depressed. So don’t do it. It’s not worth it. You’ll just end up scoffing loads of saturated fats once you stop your diet and put on more weight than you had in the first place!
• Eat portions which are too big or too small. You don’t need to fill up your whole plate with food or finish everything on your plate. If you feel full, stop eating. It takes your body 30mins to feel full so don’t be greedy.

Remember, everyone has a different body.Eat regularly, healthily and in proportion to your age, size and gender. If you follow these guidelines, you won’t be over or under-weight. You will be your ideal weight and feel great!
